I urge Michigan lawmakers to act on the bipartisan Safe Patient Care Act to support registered nurses and protect patients in hospitals across the state. It is appalling and dangerous that there is currently no law to stop hospitals from assigning nurses unlimited patients and making them work unlimited hours. When nurses can’t give every person the skilled care and attention they need, patients suffer; they are at higher risk of preventable falls, infections and even deaths. Michigan needs a law to make hospitals put patients, not profit, first. It’s urgent that legislators protect the public by passing the bipartisan Safe Patient Care Act (Michigan House bills 4482-4484 and Senate bills 204-206), which will put limits on RNs’ patient assignments and forced overtime.
