In Irish folklore, Stingy Jack was doomed to walk the Earth with only a lantern to light his way. People began to make their own versions of Jack’s lanterns by carving menacing faces into turnips to scare away Stingy Jack and other wandering spirits.

Harry Houdini passed away October 31, 1926, from acute appendicitis. His widowed wife, Bess, held annual Halloween seances to try to contact his spirit. Neither her efforts, nor those of countless others, have resulted in this famous magician escaping death.
