What is Positive Psychology? In a word, it is the scientific study of the causes of happiness. In 1998, Martin Seligman, the father of Positive Psychology and Director of the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania, was elected as the president of the American Psychological Association. In that role, he challenged his colleagues to approach psychology in a new and revolutionary way. Seligman felt that psychology, in addition to treating mental illness, also should help alleviate the mental malaise of all people – he wanted to increase joy, happiness, satisfaction – and thereby elevate the human condition. Seligman believes that effective training in the art and science of positive thinking can help us to lead more meaningful and fulfilling lives, cultivate what is best within us, and enhance our experiences of love, work and play
